Contra Costa County is considering how to address the disposal of unused, left-over, expired or unwanted prescription medication. The misuse of prescription medication has become a serious public health issue. For many years the most common cause of accidental death for people aged 25 to 64 was automobile accidents. This is no longer the case. Today, the most common cause of accidental death in this age group is from drug overdose, and prescription pain medication is leading the way. Disposing of unused or left-over medication reduces the potential for misuse of these drugs, including the potential for theft and overdose.

There are only a limited number of collection sites for non-controlled prescription medication in the county and periodic take-back events for controlled substances (such as narcotic pain medication). County staff have created an anonymous online survey to determine if additional or more convenient options for disposal are desired by Contra Costa residents.
